Tahoe Maritime Foundation provides support to maritime activities, history & education.

On June 4th, we officially kicked off education programs for the season with Family Day. In just three hours, over 350 children and adults experienced the museum, participated in water-themed learning activities in the Gardens, and enjoyed music for families. The event was free to all and from observation, the event seemed to draw a more diverse audience that past Family Days.  Soon after we opened for the season on May 19th, we had 142 school children visit the museum and engage in learning activities.

 

Looking ahead, we are especially excited about the addition of day camps.  These camps are partnership with Smokey Timbers an environmental education facility on Lake Miltona, which is about 20 minutes from the museum. Campers will engage in science-based activities the focus on water quality and stewardships as well as boats. One camp will last three days and the others are one-day camps each month from June through August. Tahoe Maritime Foundation support allows us to reduce registration fees to $10 per day, thus making camps more accessible to families of all income levels.

 

Another component of the education initiative is partnership with United Way’s Learning Tree to bring water-related learning activities to children in nearby towns.  Museums often fall into the trap of only offering education programs on-site.  Instead of expecting families to come to us, Learning Tree helps us bring a museum-quality learning experience to the community. In addition, we hope that increased awareness of the museum along with free family passes will encourage families to visit us.
