Supporting Sea Scouts in the Southbay area of California

To further our primary mission of education and leadership training, we’ve used these two projects to frame some lesson series in project management and engineering design for our Sea Scouts.

We started off with some lessons in which we developed our project plan for design and installation of our boat davits. We learned about the project management triangle; scope, cost and schedule and how to develop a requirements document.  We used cocktail napkins to learn about identifying priorities and trading features for money and time.

Following our spring regatta season, we have planned some lessons in the specific project management practice of shipyard period planning and execution.  We have identified potential shipyards in our area and are in discussions regarding availability.  Our crew is going to develop a shipyard specification and learn about the procurement process by soliciting bids for the required work.  Following our annual summer cruise, our vessel will enter the shipyard where our crew will get a taste in both the management and hands on portions of our project execution as we perform the necessary underwater body maintenance and installation of the boat davits in the same availability.
