The Board of Directors of the Friends of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum wishes to thank the Tahoe Maritime Foundation for its early and generous support.

Progress Report:

Overview:

The Friends of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum received a $25,000 grant from the Tahoe Maritime Foundation in July, 2024 in support of the creation of a new, interactive exhibit "Waves of Change: The Story of L.A. 's Pod'.  The total project cost (design/build) is $226,000, and the selected firm is Split Rock Studios.

Split Rock has previously produced successful projects at LAMM, including the "Caught, Canned, and Eaten" fishing/canning exhibit, and the interactive family gallery "What's Going on in the Harbor Today?"

Receiving the Tahoe grant early in the process was a "seal of approval" that helped make the project appealing to donors tong before the renderings were created. As a result the Friends have received additional grants as well as sponsorships from civic groups, businesses, and private individuals / museum members.

As of October 2025:

The old exhibit has been removed (see photo)

Electricians, plasters and painters are working in the space through the end of November

Installation is planned for the week of December 8th (the museum will be closed to the public during that time)

Tahoe Maritime Foundation's name and logo will be prominently featured on the donor wall.

A community and donor celebration will take place in early 2026, date TBD.

Lessons Learned:

We could have ordered the hardware earlier in the process, to avoid shipping and inventory delays.

Never underestimate the challenges of an historic building - we had to have the walls tested for asbestos before the electricians could install new outlets. Fortunately, the walls were found to be free of asbestos but we lost about 10 days due to the testing and waiting for results.
