SUCCESS STORIES
Tahoe Maritime Foundation provides support to maritime activities, history & education.

The Western Flyer Foundation's mission is "To stir curiosity through marine research, education, and a blend of science and art inspired by John Steinbeck, Ed Ricketts, and their journey on the Western Flyer."
John Steinbeck's boat, Western Flyer, was purchased and restored between 2015 and 2024 by the Western Flyer Foundation. Tahoe Maritime Foundation was pleased to grant funds to help with the purchase of the HVAC system that makes the vessel useful in the warm climate of the Sea of Cortez as well as warm days in Monterey Bay where most of her education and research is done.
The Western Flyer has embarked on an exciting return trip to Mexico’s Gulf of California for the first time since its legendary 1940 journey—85 years ago! This historic journey is retracing original intertidal sites, venturing into new areas, and collecting valuable observational data in collaboration with local researchers, students, and NGOs. With education and outreach at its core, this voyage celebrates the Flyer’s enduring legacy and future impact.

The picture shows the air conditioning unit on the far right
wall making it comfortable for students studying in the boat's
lab. Sherry Flumerfelt, the Foundation's Executive Director
tells us, "Without it, we simply could not be running programs
in the lab—it’s been extremely hot, and the system made it
possible for students to comfortably learn and work below
deck (while also protecting our instruments!)." You can
follow the 2025 journey here by reading the Crew's Log.
